70 Years of Pak-Eng Cricket Relations: Pakistan’s cricket tour of England this month holds even greater significance as it coincides with seven decades of captivating cricketing encounters between the two nations. To commemorate this milestone in Pak-Eng cricket relations, Warwickshire County Cricket Club (CCC) has planned a series of celebratory events at Edgbaston, the iconic Birmingham stadium.
This tour features a number of historic firsts. The Pakistan men’s team will be playing their inaugural Twenty20 International (T20I) match at Edgbaston. The women’s team, while having competed in international fixtures here during the 2022 Commonwealth Games, will also be making their T20I debut against England at the venue.
Warwickshire CCC is collaborating with the Pakistani Consulate in Birmingham to celebrate 70 years of Pak-Eng cricket relations. A special reception will be held on the eve of the men’s T20I game, with anticipated attendance from officials of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The guest of honor will be none other than Wazir Mohammad, Pakistan’s oldest living Test cricketer and a part of the team that secured the legendary Oval Test victory in 1954.
“We are thrilled to celebrate 70 years of Pak-Eng cricket here in England,” expressed Stuart Cain, Chief Executive of Warwickshire CCC. “It’s a privilege to have Wazir Mohammad, who played in the very first match in 1954, residing in Birmingham. We’ll be extending an invitation to him and his brother Mushtaq as esteemed guests of honor to celebrate the rich history and numerous enthralling matches played between England and Pakistan at Edgbaston.”
Further extending the festivities, Warwickshire CCC, in collaboration with the Pakistani Consulate, is planning an outreach program for the women’s T20I. Young girls from local schools in areas with significant Pakistani communities will be invited to witness the match.
The public’s enthusiasm for the series is evident in the sold-out men’s matches and the impressive ticket sales for the women’s T20I, which have already surpassed 12,000. This marks a significant moment, as it will be the first time a women’s match kicks off the international cricket season in England.
