Toronto Airport Gold Heist : Canadian authorities apprehended a third suspect in connection with the largest gold heist in the nation’s history. The audacious theft involved a shipment of gold bars and foreign currency valued at over CAD $22 million.
The 36-year-old Indian-origin man, identified as Archit Grover, was arrested on May 6, 2024, upon his return flight from India. Police had already issued a Canada-wide warrant for his arrest on charges exceeding CAD $5,000 in stolen goods and conspiracy to commit a serious crime. Grover also faces firearm-related accusations in the United States.
This arrest comes nearly a month after authorities apprehended five other individuals in Ontario with Indian backgrounds. The suspects include Parmpal Sidhu (54), Amit Jalota (40), Ammad Chaudhary (43), Ali Raza (37), and Prasath Paramalingam (35).
The meticulously planned heist unfolded in April 2023 at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport. Perpetrators used fraudulent documents to steal a secure air cargo container containing 6600 gold bars (approximately 400 kg) and foreign currency worth CAD $2.5 million. The container had arrived from Zurich, Switzerland, and was briefly stored at a secure facility within the airport before vanishing.
Investigators believe at least two former Air Canada employees may have been involved in facilitating the theft. One individual is currently in custody, while authorities seek to apprehend the other.
This case highlights the sophistication of modern criminal enterprises and the potential vulnerability of air cargo transportation systems. The ongoing investigation aims to recover the stolen valuables and bring all perpetrators to justice.
