For a number of viewers, The Gilded Age looked — or rather, sounded — a little different last night.
According to some social media users, the latest episode of the Emmy-winning HBO period drama debuted on streamer HBO Max with an accidental language swap that automatically played the episode in Spanish despite being on the English language setting.
“. @hbomax The Gilded Age is currently only playing in Spanish on my app and I cannot follow what is happening to Señora Russell. Help! Ayuda!” wrote The Daily Beast’s Kevin Fallon in one viral post.
The glitch, as some quickly figured out, was easily resolved by tooling with the platform’s settings — ironically, by changing the audio to “Spanish (Latin America)” for the English version. Deadline confirmed that the issue has since been resolved.
Earlier today, both the platform and star Carrie Coon poked fun at the snafu online.
“But for real, lo siento [I’m sorry]. #LaEdadDorada [#TheGildedAge],” wrote the streamer alongside a photo of character Oscar van Rhijn (Blake Ritson), with the caption “[cries in Spanish].”
For her part, Coon added, “¿A todos les gustó mi acento? [Did everyone like my accent?]”
Last night’s episode of The Gilded Age delivered shocking developments for its characters, including deft acknowledgements of Oscar’s sexuality — which cast members Cynthia Nixon and Christine Baranski unpacked with Deadline here — and the shooting of George (Morgan Spector). Season 3, which will air its finale next Sunday, has seen a steady growth in ratings throughout its release, leading to an easy Season 4 renewal last month. Though its premiere window missed eligibility for the Emmys in September, it’s likely to see repeat nominations next year.
The Julian Fellowes-created series follows the conflicts between the new money Russell family and their old money neighbors, the van Rhijn family, in 1880s New York City high society. The cast also features Louisa Jacobson, Nathan Lane, Donna Murphy and Ashlie Atkinson.
