Afghanistan has opted for a strategy heavy on all-rounders, naming six players in that category to their 15-man squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup. This aggressive approach aims to bolster their batting depth while maintaining a strong bowling attack. The United States and West Indies will jointly hold the tournament in June.
Captained by the world-renowned leg-spinner Rashid Khan, the squad features just four specialist batsmen: openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, along with the experienced middle-order duo of Najibullah Zadran and Mohammad Ishaq (who can also keep wicket).
We expect the selected all-rounders to significantly contribute with the bat. This group includes the exciting young talent Azmatullah Omarzai, the ever-reliable Mohammad Nabi, the powerful Gulbadin Naib, the experienced Karim Janat, and the newcomer Nangeyalia Kharote.
Afghanistan’s spin attack, a historic strength, remains formidable. Rashid Khan will be joined by the talented Mujeeb Ur Rahman and the rising star Noor Ahmad. Veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi also provides valuable spin options. This potent quartet is likely to be a key factor in Afghanistan’s success at the 20-team tournament.
The squad notably excludes Hashmatullah Shahidi, the top-order batsman who captained Afghanistan in last year’s 50-over World Cup.
Their journey begins on June 3rd when they face Uganda in their opening Group C match. New Zealand and West Indies are the other two teams in the group, with the top two progressing to the Super 8 stage.
This strategic selection with a focus on all-rounders demonstrates Afghanistan’s intent to make a strong run in their T20 World Cup title defense. Their potent spin attack and a bolstered batting lineup will be crucial in their quest for glory.
