EXCLUSIVE: Angels Studios’ upcoming animated family faith-based feature, The King of Kings, opening Friday is already counting north of $7.8M in pre-sales, we hear.
That figure eclipses the presale number at the same point in time of Angel’s surprise hit Sound of Freedom, which posted a 3-day of $19.6M and a 6-day of $41.6M, that action drama about Tim Ballard, former government agent turned vigilante, going on to make $184M domestic, and $250M WW.
As part of the promo for The King of Kings, Angel has announced a special “Kids Go Free” campaign, which allows families to receive up to one free children’s ticket with the purchase of a qualifying adult ticket when they visit Angel.com/kidsgofree and using the code KIDSGOFREE.
The “Kids Go Free” campaign is powered by Angel Studios’ pay-it-forward community. Fans of the studio’s previous releases—including Sound of Freedom, Homestead, and Cabrini—have contributed to ensure that children can go gratis to the movies.
“The King of Kings is finding incredible support from both audiences and theaters, who are passionately seeking content that is not only richly entertaining but also deeply faith-affirming,” said Brandon Purdie, Global Head of Theatrical Distribution & Brand Development at Angel Studios. “We’re seeing the same groundswell of energy and anticipation that surrounded the lead-up to Sound of Freedom—a growing wave of grassroots momentum. Will The King of Kings ignite that same level of cultural intensity? Few films ever do. But this film is charting its own course, leaving its mark on animated storytelling and capturing the hearts of audiences.”
King of Kings was directed by Seong-Ho Jang and features Kenneth Branagh as Charles Dickens, Uma Thurman as Catherine Dickens, Pierce Brosnan as Pontius Pilate, Mark Hamill as King Herod, Forest Whitaker as Peter, Ben Kingsley as High Priest Caiaphas, and Oscar Isaac as Jesus Christ. The movie was inspired by Dickens: the film follows a father and son as they embark on an imaginative journey through the life of Jesus, delivering a fresh and heartfelt take on the greatest story ever told.
Among the top opening for Biblical based animated pics are The Prince of Egypt which opened at $14.5M, followed by The Star and Jonah, which debuted respectively to $9.8M and $6.2M.
