Video footage captured the dramatic landing, showing sparks and smoke erupting from the underside of the fuselage as the plane made contact with the runway on its belly. Firefighting crews doused the aircraft with foam after it came to a complete stop.
Fortunately, neither the crew nor anyone on the ground sustained injuries during the incident. An investigation into the cause of the landing gear failure is underway by Turkish authorities.
The Boeing 767 involved is a freighter model in operation for nearly a decade. This particular design dates back to the 1980s and remains a popular choice for cargo airlines worldwide.
FedEx has confirmed their cooperation with the investigation and will release further updates as they become available. Authorities briefly closed the runway following the incident, but regular operations on other runways at Istanbul Airport were not affected.
