‘Fire Island’ Director Andrew Ahn Teases Potential Sequel

-

With another summer just around the corner, another ferry to Fire Island could be on the horizon.

Director Andrew Ahn recently revealed there’s “always been conversation about doing a sequel” to his 2022 gay romantic-comedy, which is set at the titular LGBTQ getaway and is loosely inspired by Jane Austen‘s Pride & Prejudice.

“I don’t know if a real concrete idea has been formed yet, but there are things in the ether,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

Ahn noted that writer and star Joel Kim Booster “always jokes that it’s going to be like the Sex and the City reboot And Just Like That, where it’s 30 years later and they’re older and gayer. … We’ll see what happens.”

The movie stars Booster as Noah, who enjoys one final trip with his friends to Fire Island while trying to help his best friend Howie (Bowen Yang) hook up with fellow weekender Charlie (James Scully) and ignore his own spark with Will (Conrad Ricamora).

Fire Island also stars Margaret Cho, Zane Phillips, Matt Rogers, Tomas Matos, Torian Miller and Nick Adams.

“We are part of a group chat. It’s nicknamed Pantry Girls after the Pines Pantry on Fire Island,” said Ahn. “We’re so supportive of each other. It’s such a great group. We had a big Fire Island reunion yesterday at the Los Angeles premiere of The Wedding Banquet. We’re still in each other’s lives.”

Ahn reunites with Yang on his remake of 1993’s The Wedding Banquet, premiering April 18. The modern update of the romantic-comedy also stars Lily Gladstone, Kelly Marie Tran, Han Gi-chan, Joan Chen and Youn Yuh-jung.
