EXCLUSIVE: Kevin Zegers (Taylor Sheridan’s upcoming The Madison) is set to headline Fleury, a biopic of famed NHL player Theo Fleury from director Michael Young, which goes into production in June.
Based on the bestseller Fleury: Playing with Fire by Fleury and Kirstie McLellan Day, the film explores the emotional highs and lows of Theo’s journey, both on and off the ice. A seven-time NHL All-Star, Olympic gold medalist, and Stanley Cup champion, Fleury built a career defined by grit and determination. Yet behind his success was a life of immense struggle. Fleury details his battle with childhood abuse at the hands of a trusted coach, his descent into addiction, and his path he ultimately wound up on toward healing and a life of advocacy.
Trevor Gretzky is set to portray his father, the NHL’s Wayne Gretzky, in the film, with former NHL forward and U.S. Olympian Ryan Malone rounding out the cast. Young will work from his script written with Adrian Todd Zuniga, also producing alongside Kyle David Crosby, and Gabrielle Almagor. Fleury, Zuniga, and Max Zell will exec produce.
Formerly a AAA hockey player, Zegers is set to take to the ice this Sunday, February 23, joining Fleury for a four-on-four tournament. Taking place at 3:00 p.m. on the 23rd at Crypto.com Arena, the event is Skate for LA Strong, a celebrity and NHL All-Star Alumni hockey game benefitting L.A. wildfire relief, which will be broadcast nationally. During the event, the duo will appear alongside the likes of NHL alumni including Mark Messier, celebrities including Vince Vaughn, and LAFD members. Proceeds will be distributed to first responders, fire victims and their families, event organizers said.
In a statement on the Fleury biopic, Zegers told Deadline, “For Michael and myself, bringing Theo’s life to the screen has been a labor of love. With his support and encouragement, we are thrilled to begin this journey and tell his story with the same passion and fire with which he played.”
Fleury said that the film “is more than just a sports biopic — it’s a story about survival, resilience, and hope. I want this film to help others who have gone through trauma know that they are not alone and that healing is possible.”
Known for his work in films like Transamerica and Dawn of the Dead, Zegers has more recently been seen starring on series like Rebel and The Rookie: Feds. Upcoming, he’ll be seen on The Madison, the latest Yellowstone spin-off from Taylor Sheridan. The thesp is repped by Gersh and Entertainment 360.
