Cineverse, and its horror division Bloody Disgusting, have settled on Iconic Events Releasing as the theatrical distribution partner for the August 29 unrated wide release of The Toxic Avenger. The studio and distributor worked together on the highly successful rollouts of the last two Terrifier films.
The Toxic Avenger comedic horror film directed by Macon Blair and starring Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), debuted at Fantastic Fest to critical acclaim (and a 92% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes).
The news comes as the exhibition business heads to CinemaCon in Las Vegas next week.
“Teaming with Iconic over the years has been a mutually-rewarding experience both for our team and the amazing filmmakers we are showcasing,” said Cineverse Chief Content Officer Yolanda Macias. “We look forward to building on the box office success of Terrifier 2 and 3 as we get ready for this release. As we have seen since announcing that Toxie is coming back to theaters, this gnarly action comedy franchise has incredibly passionate fans; we can’t wait until Labor Day Weekend.”
“We’re beyond thrilled that Cineverse has selected us to bring The Toxic Avenger to audiences as a follow up to our success on the last two Terrifier films. This release will honor the franchise’s cult legacy while redefining the genre for a new generation,” says Mark Rupp, CFO, COO and co-founder of Iconic Events Releasing. “This film is a wild, outrageous, and gloriously over-the-top ride that delivers everything fans love—practical effects, irreverent humor, and plenty of radioactive mayhem. Get ready for a superhero like no other!”
In the new chapter of the classic midnight movie franchise created by Lloyd Kaufman and Troma Entertainment — which tackles themes of corporate greed and systemic social injustice with timely commentary drawn straight from today’s headlines — a shocking accident transforms downtrodden janitor Winston Gooze (Dinklage) into a mutant vigilante. Armed with his signature mop, the unlikely hero battles freaks, gangsters and corrupt CEOs while trying to save his relationship with his son. The story channels the subversive gonzo energy of the original Toxic Avenger while delivering a fresh, contemporary twist.
The cast includes Kevin Bacon, Elijah Wood, Jacob Tremblay, Julia Davis, and Taylour Paige.
Macon Blair directed the film from a screenplay he wrote based on Lloyd Kaufman’s 1984 original. The film is produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz. Executive producers are Andrew Pfeffer, Jay Ashenfelter and Macon Blair
