EXCLUSIVE: Cameroonian viral basketball star Nkwain Kennedy is about to swap social media for a slightly larger screen.
Former NBA MVP Joel Embiid’s Miniature Géant is working with full service studio Bark Bark and Deon Taylor‘s Hidden Empire Film Group to create a documentary about Kennedy’s dream to play professional basketball. Embiid will executive produce and Taylor will direct.
Kennedy comes from the war-torn northwest region of Cameroon, where militias rule and life isn’t guaranteed. However, his TikTok and Instagram videos showcasing his skills on the court and magnetic dream-chasing personality have attracted attention from the likes of Embiid, Steph Curry and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The doc will see Kennedy travelling to the U.S. to train alongside current and former NBA players, where he will be offered the chance to earn a professional contract in the G League.
In a teaser video, Embiid calls Kennedy and they have a heartfelt conversation across continents. “What I want you to know is that you deserve it,” Embiid says. A beaming Kennedy responds: “I’m not going to let you down.”
Emdiid created Miniature Géant to shine a light on the diversity of Africa and the rich African disapora, with the Kennedy is a clear example of that in action. Production is already underway, with the Cameroon section of the filming completed. It captures the emotional farewell as Kennedy leaves his family behind to chase the future that could change their lives forever.
“Nkwain really embodies everything that’s great about sports: the grind, the passion, and the sacrifice,” said Embiid, “I couldn’t be more excited to help bring his incredible story to the world.”
“This is a dream come true,” said Kennedy. “I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to pursue my basketball goals in the USA, and I’m determined to make the most of it. I hope my journey inspires other young athletes in Cameroon and the world at large to chase their dreams, no matter how big they may seem.”
The film, currently untitled, is the first sports doc from Miniature Géant, the production banner Ebiid set up in collaboration with LeBron James‘ empowerment brand Uninterrupted, which is part of Fulwell Entertainment, the business that resulted from the SpringHill Entertainment and Fulwell73 merger.
Producers are Dustin Frissell, Tabitha Mason-Elliott, and Daniel Sattelmeyer of Bark Bark, Sarah Kazadi-Ndoye of Miniature Géant and Roxanne Avent Taylor, with Ephraim Salaam serving as co-producer for Hidden Empire.
“Nkwain’s story doesn’t just move you, it shakes you. It’s Hoop Dreams meets Undefeated, with an unstoppable heartbeat. This story grabs your chest, fills your eyes, and makes you believe again in purpose, in fight, in the raw power of a dream that refuses to die. As the director, I’m not just telling a story; I’m lighting a fuse. The world needs this, and we’re about to give it to them,” said director Deon Taylor.
Kennedy is represented by Karl Mullins of K&R Development Group, who said: “I hope that Nkwain is able to fulfill the desire in his heart of playing professional basketball and being able to support himself financially, doing what he loves. I’m just excited to see what’s next for the champ.”
