EXCLUSIVE: ESPN host and Improbable Media CEO Jay Williams has signed on to serve as an executive producer on A Bridge Between, an upcoming sports drama directed by Jeff Celentano (The Hill).
Based on a true story, A Bridge Between centers around Anthony Hodges, a young basketball player recovering from a devastating car accident that leaves him physically injured and mentally shaken. As Anthony battles self-doubt and the long road of rehabilitation, a chance encounter at a YMCA on Christmas Eve brings him face-to-face with Bobby Verdun, a former basketball coach turned mentor who carries emotional and physical scars of his own. Their unlikely bond becomes the foundation for Anthony’s return to the court – and a life defined not by tragedy, but by purpose.
Williams, whose own basketball career was cut short by a life-changing accident, said in a statement that he sees the film as a deeply personal and transformative project.
“While not a biopic, this story does mirror certain aspects of my own journey – loss, identity, reinvention, and the question of who we are without the game,” he said. “A Bridge Between is about more than basketball; it’s about the relationships that pull us from the edge and push us toward something greater.”
The film was penned by Bobby Verdun (Hustle) and Rob Goodrich. Goodrich and Jason Armstrong will produce the project under their Walk Like A Duck Entertainment banner, in association with Celentano and Warren Ostergard of Enliven Content. Casting is underway and is being directed by Lisa Beach, who previously worked on Horrible Bosses, Wedding Crashers, and Walk the Line. Filming is set to begin in July in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Williams is today one of ESPN’s leading on-air contributors. He is the host of the network’s College GameDay show and frequently contributes to First Take and Get Up. He is also the CEO of Improbable Media, a company he started with Nigerian-Greek NBA superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo.
On the court, Williams was one of the most prolific players in college basketball history, winning the National Championship at Duke University in 2001 and being named Naismith College Player of the Year in 2002. He was the second overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft and played for the Chicago Bulls.
