Charmaine DeGraté, one of the few writers who has worked in the Star Wars, Marvel and Game of Thrones universes, has a new studio home.
DeGraté has struck a first-look deal with Universal Television. DeGraté, known for working on massive IP, will develop and produce projects for the NBCUniversal studio through her Crestview production company.
She is coming off the back of wrapping development on a secret Marvel project. She is already creating shows for Universal Television, as well as Apple TV+.
This comes after she was a co-exec producer on Star Wars: The Acolyte, the Disney+ series that was set in the High Republic-era before the events of the Skywalker Saga and follows a Jedi investigation into a series of crimes.
Before that, she was part of the team that turned the Sunset Strip back into the early 1970s as a co-exec producer of Amazon’s Daisy Jones & The Six. She was also a co-exec producer on HBO’s House of the Dragon.
She has also served as a consulting producer on Apple’s Manhunt, Starz’s Elisabeth Moss-fronted Shining Girls and the Warhammer cinematic universe, which is in the works at Amazon with Henry Cavill.
On the feature side, she has written two tentpole feature films for Skydance: Bermuda Triangle, directed by Marc Webb, and Atlantis from Jurassic World’s Colin Trevorrow.
The deal is the first of Universal Television’s new mini first-look model, which sees creators develop a set number of projects with the studio, allowing both parties to test the relationship before committing to a long-term partnership.
DeGraté said, “I’m thrilled to be a part of the Universal Television family. It’s a privilege to collaborate with the exceptional team at UTV whose bold vision for storytelling continues to raise the bar in our industry. This creative partnership marks an exciting new chapter.”
Kate Hoenigsberg, SVP of Drama Development at Universal Television, added, “We’re rethinking what partnership can look like in today’s competitive landscape. This model allows us to support visionary writers like Charmaine in a way that is flexible, simple and mutually beneficial. We’re excited to get to work developing with Charmaine, who we have been fans of for so long, and seeing what we will accomplish together.”
