Amazon MGM Studios has confirmed what was reported last night: Twisters star Glen Powell is starring in a Ron Howard directed untitled firefighter film.
The pitch came from Christina Hodson. Imagine Entertainment and Powell’s banner, Barnstorm, are producing.
Imagine and Barnstorm sparked the idea of doing a movie for Howard to direct, with Powell to star as a firefighter, and approached Hodson, who created an original pitch for the new film.
Hodson is writing the script, which follows disparate childhood friends, now elite firefighters, who must rekindle their fractured relationship when a series of deadly fires sweep across Texas.
Producers include Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Jeb Brody, and Barnstorm’s Dan Cohen and Glen Powell. Christina Hodson will executive produce.
Glen Powell is an award-winning actor who recently starred in the Netflix comedy Hit Man, which he also co-wrote and produced. He will next star in the highly anticipated series Chad Powers, which he also co-created and co-wrote, and will soon star in Edgar Wright’s The Running Man for Paramount Pictures, which is slated to be released on November 7. Powell also recently wrapped production on the revenge thriller Huntington, and is currently in production in JJ Abrams’ upcoming film for Warner Bros. It was recently announced that Universal Pictures has entered into a First-Look deal with Powell’s Barnstorm production company. The first project produced under this deal will be The Natural Order, which Powell will also star in and will be directed by Barry Jenkins and based on the novel by Matt Aldrich. Some of Powell’s other recent credits include Twisters, Prime Video’s The Blue Angels, Anyone but You, and Top Gun: Maverick. Powell is represented by CAA and Johnson Shapiro.
Christina Hodson first transitioned from development executive to screenwriter in 2012. Since then, her produced credits include being the sole screenwriter of Bumblebee for Paramount (2018) and both Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey (2020) and The Flash (2023) for Warner Bros. and DC Comics. Among various projects for the studios, Hodson’s recent work includes co-writing a screenplay for the 11th installment of the Fast and the Furious franchise with Oren Uziel. In addition to writing, Hodson served as a co-producer on Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey, and is producing through her company, Hodson Exports, which she runs with executive Morgan Howell. Hodson is represented by CAA, Northstar, and attorney Jim Grillo.
InSneider first had the news last night about this project.
