EXCLUSIVE: Amazon MGM Studio’s The Big Sick and The Idea of You filmmaker Michael Showalter is back with the theatrical streaming studio for an untitled pop movie inspired by Cyrano de Bergerac.
Showalter will direct the untitled Cyrano Pop movie which Andrea Seigel will write based on a Cyrano de Bergerac type story by her and Showalter about a behind-the-scenes songwriter in the world of pop stars.
Catherine Davis of Nine Lives Entertainment, John Davis of Davis Entertainment, and Showalter and Jordana Mollick of Semi-Formal Productions are producing. Emily Crook is overseeing the project for Semi-Formal Productions.

Showalter and Mollick’s Semi-Formal Productions recently signed a multi-year first-look deal with Amazon MGM Studios for narrative features. Showalter’s latest film, The Idea of You, starring Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine, became Amazon’s most successful romantic comedy debut. His upcoming projects include Amazon’s Oh. What. Fun., a holiday comedy starring Michelle Pfeiffer, streaming Dec. 3, and Verity, reuniting him with Hathaway and Amazon MGM Studios for a theatrical release in 2026. His previous feature films include Spoiler Alert, The Eyes of Tammy Faye, for which Jessica Chastain won the Academy Award for best actress, and The Big Sick, which received an Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay. Further film credits include Hello, My Name Is Doris, and The Lovebirds. On the TV side, Showalter directed and produced Hulu’s The Dropout, which earned six Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Directing, as well as a best actress win for Amanda Seyfried. Other recent television directing and producing credits include Happy Face for Paramount+, The Pradeeps Of Pittsburgh for Amazon MGM, I Love That For You for Showtime, Search Party for HBO Max, In The Dark for CW, and The Shrink Next Door for Apple TV+. Semi-Formal is represented by UTA, Artists First and Goodman Genow.
Seigel recently wrote the screenplay for Focus Features’ The Silent Twins, which stars Letitia Wright and premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. Seigel also wrote the 2014 film Laggies, starring Keira Knightley and Chloe Grace Moretz. She is represented by UTA and Curate.
Nine Lives Entertainment is a production company founded by producer Catherine Davis. Davis is currently producing several high-profile film and television projects, including a biopic of funk icon George Clinton, frontman of Parliament-Funkadelic, starring Eddie Murphy and directed by Academy Award winner Bill Condon for Amazon MGM, and more upcoming projects to be announced.
