EXCLUSIVE: Karren Karagulian, the Armenian-American actor best known for his work with Sean Baker on award-winning films such as Anora and The Florida Project, has signed with Buchwald for representation.
This signing comes after Anora‘s impressive showing at this year’s Academy Awards, with five wins from six nominations. Karagulian was also recently invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences following Anora‘s success.
In Baker’s Palme d’Or winner, released by Neon last fall, a young sex worker (Oscar winner Mikey Madison) from Brooklyn impulsively marries the son (Mark Eydelshteyn) of a Russian oligarch, only to have their fairytale romance threatened when his parents attempt to annul the marriage. Karagulian earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination for his turn as Toros, the godfather and enforcer for the oligarch’s family, who is tasked with dissolving the marriage.
A champion of indie cinema throughout his 25+ year career, Karagulian kicked off his collaboration with Baker on the 2000 film Four Letter Words, which marked his feature directorial debut. Since then, he has also starred in Prince of Broadway, Starlet, Tangerine, The Florida Project, and Red Rocket from the filmmaker, earning the additional credit of associate producer on 2015’s Tangerine.
Outside his work with Baker, Karagulian is slated to star alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, Alan Ritchson, and Awkafina in The Man with the Bag, a holiday action comedy from Amazon MGM Studios, which is currently in post-production. He continues to be represented by ColorCreative for management and Ginsburg Daniels Kallis for legal.
