Manchester United reportedly declined the opportunity to sell Harry Maguire this summer and hopes he will sign a new contract instead.
Maguire has been a highly misused person at Old Trafford since his £80 million move from Leicester City in 2019.
He became the world’s most expensive defender at the time, a title he still holds – Manchester City signed his closest contender two years ago, Josco Gvaldior.
Maguire has made 246 appearances for United in the past six years, winning the Carabao Cup as club captain in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
He wore an armband from 2019 to 2023, and was handed the role by Ole Gunner Solskal in July 2023 before Eric Ten Hug took over it to Bruno Fernandez.
The 32-year-old’s performance is often under very scrutiny, with United trying to move him in a recent transfer window. However, new (ISH) co-owner Ir Jim Ratcliffe and head coach Reuben Amorim clearly appreciate him.

According to the Daily Mail, they are both very big fans, so United wants to give Maguire a new deal, so he can “see his career at Old Trafford.”
A report from Mike Keegan said the decision came despite strong interest in defenders.
Certainly, the Premier League Giants, who signed four first team players this summer, “rejected approaches from clubs in the UK and overseas.”
There are “many stakeholders,” with three Premier League aspects and two of Italy exploring Maguire’s moves.
Interested clubs have been informed that “the English defender could potentially extend his contract and spend the rest of his career at Old Trafford.”
Maguire’s £190,000 weekly contract expires at the end of 26/2025, but players hope that “we hope to emulate Dennis Irwin, Gary Pallister, Steve Bruce and Brian Robson as key players.”
There have been no discussion about the extension yet, but United have sent a message that they want to protect him.
If an agreement cannot be reached, Maguire “is unlikely to run out of options” and “knows” his former teammate Scott McTominai in Naples. Probably because he does not live under the rocks.
The Big 3 of Turkey, Besiktas, Galatasaray and Fenervas are one of Maguire’s “worshipers,” and the French club “surveillance the situation” as Monaco and Marseille. Besiktas and Fenerbahce are managed by original bosses Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Jose Mourinho, respectively.
No mention of proposed new deals, including wage cuts or performance-related incentives, has been made, and the expansion appears to have not been agreed anywhere.
Once Maguire’s contract is in its final year, overseas clubs can begin negotiations for pre-contract agreements from January 1st.
