WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump will visit the Kennedy Center on Wednesday the day the recipients of this year’s honors are announced.
Trump shunned the Kennedy Center honors during his first term after the artist said he would not attend from the protest. This year he has It was handed over to the new chairman of the Kennedy Center They fired the board and replaced it with a loyalist.
In a Truth Social Post Tuesday, Trump teased the name change of the Performing Arts Center, saying it would be restored to its previous glory.
“The Great Trump/Kennedy Center candidates, Hoops, Kennedy Center, Awards,” Trump wrote. He said the work is being done on a site that says “it will bring you back to the absolute top level of luxury, charm and entertainment.”
“It was falling during a physically difficult time, but I’ll make a big comeback soon!!!” he wrote.
Trump has shown he wants a more active role, but it is unclear how this year’s batch of recipients was chosen. Historically, the bipartisan advisory committee has selected winners over the years, ranging from George Balanchine and Tom Hanks to Aretha Franklin and Stephen Sondheim. Messages sent to the Kennedy Center Press office asking how this year’s recipients were selected were not returned Tuesday.
The Kennedy Center posted this on social media. “We’ll be coming soon… Country music icons, British people, New York City rock bands, dance queens and billions of dollars actors walking to the Kennedy Center Opera House…”
In the past, Trump has had the idea of acknowledging the Kennedy Center’s honor to singer-songwriter Paul Anka and actor Sylvester Stallone, one of three actors named Hollywood “Ambassadors” earlier this year. Anka was to play “My Path” in Trump’s first inauguration.
The Kennedy Center honors were founded in 1978 and distributed to a wide range of artists. Until Trump’s first term, both parties’ presidents traditionally attended annual ceremonies.
Prominent liberals such as Barbra Streisand and Warren Beatty were recognized during the administration of Republican George W. Bush, with leading conservative Charlton Heston immersed in the administration of Democrat Bill Clinton.
In 2017, winner Norman Leah declared he would not attend the White House celebration in protest of Trump’s proposed federal arts fundraising, then Trump and first lady Melania Trump decided to skip the Kennedy Center event and left throughout his first term. The winners at the time included Trump critics such as Cher, Lynn Manuel Miranda and Sally Field.
Since taking office for the second time, Trump has taken a much stronger stance at the Kennedy Center and has given himself to his governance. In addition to naming himself to remake the board, he also took over programming decisions at the centre and showed that he had vowed to end the event featuring drug performers.
Step has drawn further criticism from some artists. In March, the producer of “Hamilton” cited an aggressive acquisition of Trump’s facility leadership in 2026, breaking out of staging the Broadway hit musical. Other artists who cancelled the event include actor Issa Ray, singer Rhineon Giddens and writer Louise Penny.
House Republicans have introduced amendments to the spending bill that will rename the Kennedy Center Opera House in honor of First Lady Melania Trump. Maria Schreiber, the nie of the late President John F. Kennedy, has criticized the proposal to rename the entire center after Trump as “crazy.”
The winners of the Kennedy Center honors will receive a medallion on the rainbow ribbon. This nods to the range of skills that fall into performing arts. In April, the center changed the exterior lights from a long-standing rainbow to permanently red, white and blue displays.
