Jamie Carrager suggested that Liverpool “did it get away with it” when it comes to Premier League this season, and that they “didn’t look right at all.”
The Anfield side was determined to have one of the best forwarding windows of all time, but the first competitive match of the season ended with a loss as Crystal Palace won by a penalty at Wembley.
The signatures of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong and the possibility of the acquisition of Alexander Isak have believed Liverpool was walking to the third Premier League title, but Carragher has doubts.
“There’s no story about Liverpool getting away,” Karager, the One Club man who played 737 times for Liverpool, told Sky Sports.
“Looking at history, it wasn’t just about having the best players, but having the best team, and getting that balance right, and it didn’t look right at all on the weekend.
“I think we’re going to be playing the title race and I think there’s a lot of talk about it. I think the great thing about football is what we actually saw on Sunday at Liverpool. It didn’t look right.

“I say it’s about spending a lot of money and buying the best players, but also managing that team, making it work and balancing it with it.”
However, Karager was encouraged by Wurtz, who said he felt that “stars came to the Premier League.”
“Even in the preseason, he just looks like a lesson,” Karager said of the 22-year-old German International. “He looks like a special footballer. We also got a glimpse into the Community Shield. He’s already linked to Sarah and he’s a good offensive player.
“He’s a Liverpool player, but when someone comes to the Premier League, I think it feels like one of the players, and I think it’s going to be a great addition to the stars.
“For me, I’m thinking about losing Kevin de Bruin, one of the best players we’ve ever had in the league.
Carragher is joined by longtime co-host Gary Neville. He said he wanted to see how new signatures at other clubs fit.
“I’m intrigued by players signed by top clubs,” Neville said. “Break it with (Viktor) Gyokeres, (Benjamin) Sesko, (Liam) Chelsea. Which players in larger positions do you think will step up and be real?
“At this point, you don’t think any of them are considered world class and the best in the world, but which of them can become those players? And I think that’s what’s interesting about this season.
