EXCLUSIVE: Charlie Hall (Monster: The Lyle & Eric Menendez Story, Sex Lives of College Girls) has joined the recurring cast of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s upcoming new season of Netflix‘s “Monster” anthology series, which centers on murderer and suspected serial killer Ed Gein, played by Charlie Hunnam.
Known as the Butcher of Plainfield or the Plainfield Ghoul, Gein confessed to murdering two women in the 1950s and also allegedly made trophies out of bodies and skin of corpses he exhumed from graveyards. He is suspected of having been responsible for the death of others, including his brother Henry, but the authorities were unable to connect him definitively to any of the cases.
Gein’s story inspired the Leatherface character in Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and largely inspired Robert Bloch’s novel Psycho, which was later adapted to film with Alfred Hitchcock directing. He is also said to have inspired the Buffalo Bill character in The Silence of the Lambs.
In a recurring role, Hall will play the real-life Deputy Frank Worden. The deputy was the son of Bernice Worden, owner of a hardware store and Gein’s final victim. Alongside Waushara County Sheriff Arthur Schley, the lead investigator of the Gein investigation, Deputy Worden discovered his mother’s remains at the family store. He played an essential role in Gein’s identification, which led to his arrest.
The third installment of the “Monster” franchise reunites Hall with Murphy, who most recently collaborated on Monster: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, the Netflix anthology’s second season. Hall played Erik Menendez’s best friend, Craig Cignarelli.
The cast also includes Laurie Metcalf as Gein’s mother, Augusta; Tom Hollander as Hitchcock, with Olivia Williams playing his wife Alma Reville; Addison Rae as Evelyn Hartley; and Suzanna Son, in an unknown role. The show’s fourth season will center on Lizzie Borden.
Monster‘s original installment, centering on serial killer and cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer, hit No. 3 on Netflix’s Top 10 list of its most popular English-language programs.
In addition to Hall’s role in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, he played Andrew in Season 2 of the HBO Max series The Sex Lives of College Girls, from Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble, and returned for the second season of Freeform’s Single Drunk Female. Up next, he will be tackling a series regular role in Apple’s upcoming Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, from creator and showrunner David J. Rosen.
On the film side, he appeared as Kiernan Shipka’s soon-to-be former love interest in the HBO Max/New Line feature film Sweethearts. Additional credits include Peacock’s Bel-Air, the Disney+ series Big Shot, and Netflix’s Moxie, directed by and starring Amy Poehler. He is repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment.
