“We should thank the president for trying to end this conflict,” Vance said the moment Zelensky was caught off guard. “Have you ever said thank you once? In this whole meeting? No, have you ever said thank you in this whole meeting?”
Zelensky tried to protect himself by saying that he had always expressed his gratitude to the United States for the military and financial support that Russia provided after it invaded it in 2022. However, the damage was done.

“By the way, thank you for the map,” he said.
He was not alone.
Trump himself used the T-words about 12 times at later meetings, celebrating fellow European leaders.
He called Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni a great leader with a long career and said he liked French President Emmanuel Macron even more as he came to know him.

British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer thanked the president four times, noting that after three years of battle, no one else could bring the conflict to a possible end.
“So I thank you for that,” Starmer said.
NATO Secretary General Mark Latte called Trump “Dear Donald” during the meeting and later called the president “surprising.”
