Wayne Rooney urges Manchester United to do two signs before the transfer window closes, warning that it is “crazy” to not move for a solution to what he considers as a prominent goalkeeping problem.
United legend was talking on his BBC podcast after seeing Reuben Amorim’s side lose 1-0 to Arsenal over the opening weekend.
After scrutiny last season, Andre Onana was removed from the team completely, and Amorim claimed the decision was tactical rather than injury. ”
Rooney believes the situation is not allowed to drift away, and United advocates argue that his generation needs to feel the same confidence after Edwin van der Sarl arrives.
“I’m sure there’s a goalkeeper situation and all Man United fans are asking the same questions,” he said.
“For me, Donnaruma is there. If there’s a chance you can get him, you have to go for him. Obviously (the goalkeeper) is the problem.
“I came back when Roy Carroll and Tim Howard were in goal, and I don’t think there was 100% confidence from the defenders in front of the two goalkeepers.
“But Minute van der Sar came in and calmed it all down. The defender trusted him more and he had an improved performance output.
“These united players want confidence and confidence in the goals behind them, and we don’t see them as what we have now.

“Donnaruma is 26 years old and he’s one of the best keepers in the world. If Manchester United didn’t go for him, it would be crazy.”
Rooney stressed that Italian pay demands could complicate the issue, but he believes United should at least ask questions.
He also offered words of encouragement to Onana, who he says, if Amorim decides not to pursue another option, he can regain his Inter Milan form.
“Andre Onana is a great keeper, I saw him at Inter and he was great. So, I hope that if they don’t sign a new goalkeeper, he can return to that level of shape, but he certainly didn’t fill us with confidence last season.”
Rooney also identified the midfield as another area that needed to be strengthened.
United are linked to Carlos Valleva of Brighton and Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace, and Rooney says the division is just as important as solving goalkeeper problems.
“Yeah, yeah, but obviously I don’t know what the PSR situation is,” he explained when asked if the new midfielder was a priority.
“But getting a midfielder and goalkeeper is a priority. If you can handle it before the windows close, they’ll be in a ok place.”
