Washington (AP) – Watchdog Investigation Former special advisor Jack Smith on top of him President Donald Trump’s prosecution Smith’s lawyers wrote in a letter obtained Tuesday by the Associated Press, based on the premise “without imagination.”
The letter comes to the news that Smith and his legal team’s first response is that the Special Adviser’s Office, an independent watchdog office, has launched an investigation into whether Smith is engaged in inappropriate political activities through a criminal investigation into Trump.
The lawyer told office’s representative, Jamieson Greer, that his investigation into Smith was “completely uncredited.”
“Mr. Smith’s actions as a special advisor were consistent with the decision of the prosecutor who dedicated his career to following the facts and law.
The Special Advisors Office, which is completely different from the position of the Department of Justice’s special advisor, is Smith. It will be held for over two years starting November 2022confirmed the investigation following a request from Republican Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas. Hatch actfederal law prohibiting certain civil servants from engaging in political activities.
Cotton argued that Smith had tried to obstruct his prosecution in the 2024 presidential election, and attempted to effectively and quickly trace the case towards a resolution, including asking lower courts to consider the best legal issues before considering the matter.
However, Smith’s attorneys say the argument is inconsistent with the facts and should be noted that court decisions or other authorities will not prohibit prosecutors from investigating allegations of criminal conduct against candidates. Politics, they say, was not involved in the decision to bring the case.
“Reviews of records and history of procedures show opposition. Mr. Smith was fiercely committed to making prosecutors’ decisions based solely on evidence. He worked hard on applicable Department of Justice guidelines and federal prosecutors’ principles.
“Predicates on this investigation,” they added. “There is no imaginary basis or basis,” he added.
