The Thursday Murder Club has come to life from page to screen in the film adaptation of Richard Osman’s book, directed by Chris Columbus and now streaming on Netflix.
Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kinglsey and Celia Imrie lead the film as the core group of four who make up the titular club — ex-spy Elizabeth, former union manager Ron, retired therapist Ibrahim and retired nurse Joyce. The quartet mainly analyze cold cases, looking for threads to pull at in the safety of their jigsaw room at the retirement home known as Cooper’s Chase, but when developments surrounding the future of the community lead to not just one, but two murders, they spring to action.
Also starring Naomie Ackie as Donna De Freitas, Daniel Mays as DCI Chris Hudson, Henry Lloyd-Hughes as Bogdan, Tom Ellis as Ron’s son Jason, Jonathan Pryce as Stephen, David Tennant as Ian Ventham, Geoff Bell as Tony Curran, Paul Freeman as John and Richard E. Grant as Bobby Tanner, the film contains six needle drops as background to the shenanigans and investigations that ensue.
Through many methods — some conventional and some less so — the group enlists the help of police officers De Freitas and Hudson as well as other sources to get leads and clues for motive of both murders. Their determination leads to an abundance of answers.
