Norwegian film Loveable is set for a wide theatrical release in China for September 5, through distributor BlueMedia Times.
At the Beijing International Film Festival earlier this year, the film won best feature film, best director and best screenplay for Lilja Ingolfsdottir, and best actress for Helga Guren (Home for Christmas).
Loveable is writer-director Ingolfsdottir’s debut feature, and the film will premiere on approximately 3,000 screens across China.
The film follows 40-year-old Maria, a mother of four who is struggling to save her marriage. She must come to terms with herself when her husband says that he wants a divorce.
Loveable first had its world premiere at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in 2024, where it picked up five major wins, including the Special Jury Prize, Best Actress (Helga Guren), Europa Cinemas Label Jury Award, the FIPRESCI Jury Award and the Ecumenical Jury Award.
The film is produced by Thomas Robsahm (The Worst Person in the World) for Nordisk Film Production A/S and Amarcord, with support from the Norwegian Film Institute.
International sales for the film is handled by TrustNordisk.
The film stars Guren alongside Oddgeir Thune (Billionaire Island), Heidi Gjermundsen Broch (Kids in Crime) and Marte Magnusdotter Solem (Out of Nature).
“Being selected for theatrical release in China is a great milestone and happens rarely to foreign art house films,” said Nicolai Korsgaard, Sales Director at TrustNordisk. “It reflects not only the quality and resonance of the film but also the growing interest in global stories among Chinese audiences, something we haven’t seen at this scale since before the COVID-19 pandemic.”
