Washington (AP) – Democrat Jerry Nadler New York said he will not run for reelection next year, according to an interview published Monday night by The New York Times.
Nadler told the Times that after then-President Joe Biden’s truncated reelection campaign last year, he said, “I really said something about the need for generational change for parties. I want to respect that.” He suggested that a young Democrat in his seat “maybe we can do better and perhaps help us more.”
Nadler, 78, is serving his 17th term in Congress. He chaired the House Judiciary Committee from 2019 to 2023, then served as a ranking member of the panel after Republicans acquired House leadership. He resigned from the role late last year.

Without naming his name, Nadler suggested in the era that some of his democratic colleagues should also consider retiring.
“I’m not saying that there should be changes throughout the party,” Nadler said in an interview posted Monday. “But I think a certain amount of change is very helpful, especially when faced with the challenges of (President Donald) Trump and his early fascism.”
