WASHINGTON (AP) – President Donald Trump is set to issue an executive order with a name change Friday Ministry of Defense As a War Bureau – A long-standing movement aimed at projecting American troops around the world.
It’s one Congress has the only power to establish, close and rename federal divisions, with some of Trump’s closest supporters on Capitol Hill proposing laws that codify new names into law. Without a change in the law, Trump will allow the Pentagon to use secondary titles.
“From 1789 until the end of World War II, the US military fought under the flag of the Department of War,” Rep. Greg Stutube, a Florida Republican veteran, said in a statement. “It is appropriate to pay tribute to their eternal example and famous commitment to lethality by restoring the name of the ‘War Ministry’ into the army. ”
Rick Scott, R-Fla. , and Mike Lee of R-Utah, has introduced fellow laws in the Senate.
The Ministry of War was created in 1789 and was renamed in 1947, two years after the end of World War II.
Trump says he wants to return his name to the War Department because he “sounds just right.” With the Republican President Defense Secretary Pete Hegses We’ve been creating a social media poll on the topic in March and discussing the name change for a long time.
Since then, Hegses has hinted at the multiple public events, including a speech in Fort Benning, Georgia, that his title as Secretary of Defense may not be permanent. He said in the auditorium full of soldiers, “Tomorrow might be a slightly different title.”
In August, Trump told reporters, “Everyone liked that there was an incredible history of victory when it was the War Bureau. And then we turned it into the Department of Defense.”
“We’re just going to do that,” Trump told reporters when faced with the possibility that Congressional actions would be required to make the name change.
“I’m sure Congress will be together,” he said, “if that’s what you need.”
