Alan Shearer chose a Liverpool star that has deteriorated this season and another star that Arne Slot “have to play” after a 2-1 win at Everton on Saturday.
Ryan Gravenburch and Hugo Ekitike scored a Reds goal in the first half, and then a stunning Idrissa Guey striker gave Toffee hope after the break.
And Shearer thinks he’s lucky that the slot teams win the game and maintain a 100% record at the start of this season.
He told NBC Sports:
“But I think the second half slipped into what we saw in the first four games. I thought Everton was a better team. I think they deserve to go back to the game.

“They created one or two chances. A great finish from Idrissa Guey gave them a bit of that lifeline. They were a team pushing. They were teams that had energy and I thought they couldn’t get the points.”
Liverpool has admitted nine goals in seven games this season, and Shearer believes he is struggling to find a “balance” between defense and offense as things stand.
He said:
“He was a free throw. He had a license to go, walk, and move on. So, to me, whether he goes or not, helps him stay and protect it with Van Dik and Conate, he appears to be caught up in two minds.
“I don’t think they’re in the balance at this moment, and I think it’s part of the reason he left (Florian) Wirtz on the bench and (Alexander) Isaac on the bench because he’s back to normal.
“He went back to what they had last season because he felt the hustle and bustle and the energy needed in this game, so I think he’s back to his attempts and trust.
“And yeah, I think there’s a lot to work on Liverpool, and there you have to say, they’ve won the game and that has to be a big bonus for them.”

The nine-digit summer signatures Wirtz and Isak were not introduced until the final 30 minutes at Anfield. Shearer says the slots now have to “play.”
Shearer added: “That’s not a bad option. At that moment, if I was ekitike, there was no way I thought I deserved to rule out this aspect in the format.
“I mean, the goal I’m scoring, and he can’t rule him out. He has to play him, so Isaac has to be patient. He’s not 100% fit yet.
“But they have so many options not only in these two but also in wide positions. And if things are working fine, if they’re not, at least he’s trying to chuck the player and try it out.
