YouTube will ultimately allow you to hide recommendations for pop-ups that appear at the end of the video, the company announced Wednesday. Once the end screen appears, you can hide the popup from the current video by tapping the new “Hide” button in the top right corner of the video player.
Selecting this button will hide only the end screen of the current video, not all videos on the platform, the company notes. If you want to return the end screen, you can tap the (View) button.
The decision for users to hide the end screen is a welcome addition to the platform, especially as it covers the last bit of the video and in some cases it can be difficult to see what’s going on.
The company has also announced that it will remove the subscription button that appears when hovering the cursor over a video brand watermark. YouTube explains that it is because there is already a subscribe button just below the video player.
YouTube says it launches new features in response to user feedback. Many say they want an option to minimize video distractions and allow them to focus on the content they are currently watching.
As for the creator, YouTube points out that there is still an option to add an end screen to the video. The company expects these changes to have minimal impact on creator performance and expect views on the platform.
For example, YouTube has found in experiments that when users provide the option to hide the end screen, the view from the end screen will result in a reduction of less than 1.5%. Additionally, we found that less than 0.05% of all channel subscriptions come from the hover vs. subscription feature of video watermarks.
