Snapchat has priced its memory features after nearly a decade of functioning as a digital time capsule for moments from your life. The social media giant has announced that free access to features will be restricted to 5GB. If your memories exceed this limit, you will need to subscribe to one of the new Memories storage plans.
The company told TechCrunch in an email that the introductory storage plan offers up to 100GB of storage for $1.99 a month. SnapChat+ users get up to 250GB of storage as part of a subscription that costs $3.99 per month, while Snapchat Platinum users get 5TB as part of a subscription that costs $15.99 per month.
When Snapchat first launched memories, it explained that users didn’t expect to grow into what they today, as they saved over a trillion in memory on the platform.
“It’s never easy to move from paying the service to paying for free, but I hope the value of providing memories is worth the cost,” Snapchat wrote in a blog post. “These changes will allow us to continue to invest in improving memories for the entire community.”
Snapchat provides 12 months of temporary memory storage for memory exceeding the 5GB storage limit. The company points out that users can download memory directly to their devices. If you exceed the limit but do not sign up for the plan, the oldest snaps will be saved, but the most recent snaps that exceed the storage limit will be deleted.
According to Snapchat, the change will not affect most users. This is because the majority have less than 5GB of memory. It will primarily affect people with “thousands of snaps,” the company notes.
The decision to deploy paid storage for Snapchat memory can address the increased infrastructure costs and monetize users with high storage needs while allowing most users to access it for free.
