WASHINGTON (AP) – Washington’s political leaders spend a fair amount of energy Condemnation Opponents of something that could be expanded Government closureand the efforts include shaping the narrative for next year’s election.
The democratic campaigning sector for Congressmen has put out digital ads in 35 districts they consider to be competitive. The ad accused Republicans of “disturbing affordable healthcare – intentionally.” The ad coincides with democratic claims that their health insurance concerns will be addressed as part of a bill to fund the government, which Republicans rejected. House Maily Forward, a democratic sorted group, has launched a $3 million ad campaign in 10 Republican-owned districts.
The House Republican campaign organization has launched two digital ads in the Swing district. “It’s a sabotage. Democrats are threatening government shutdowns to stop President Trump’s policies, like Trump’s crackdown on MS-13 and violent criminals,” says one of the ads. Meanwhile, two conservative advocacy groups, one Nation and the American Action Network, have announced advertising purchases in the New York and Washington markets. “The awakened mob demanded the government shutdown,” the ad says. “That’s exactly what the liberals in Congress are doing.”
In the narrow margin that determines who controls each chamber of Congress, the two parties cannot afford to leave anything by chance when it comes to winning the shutdown messaging campaign. but Recent History It suggests there is reason to doubt that the closure will be a factor in the 2026 election.
Republicans won a big victory after forced shutdown in 2013
Shutdown in October 2013 Exhibition A lasted for 16 days. Republicans have called for a major change in Democratic President Barack Obama’s signature health care law in exchange for funding the government and giving the Treasury the ability to borrow to pay national bills.
Doug Heye is R-Va. recalls GOP leadership, who served as deputy chief of staff for Eric Cantor, the then majority leader of the group. But many of the ranks and files were certain that by a small number of GOP senators they had won and that shutdowns could be used as leverage to roll back some of the Affordable Care Act.
“Essentially, if this is what these people want, they touch the stove and they get burned and they realize you won’t. This is not a smart course,” Hay said.
That’s pretty much what happened. Republicans succumbed as polls showed GOP fares were inadequate. However, it didn’t take long for the public to move on.
More than a year later, Republicans recorded a big victory in the ballot box. They won 13 seats in the house and have already expanded the majority. They also won nine seats in the Senate and seized a majority.
Hay said the election is a lesson that unless closures continue to last and starts to affect voters at an individual level, the election fallout will likely be minimal.
“Voters tend to have short memories of this. Anyone who they blamed, they moved on to one or two or ten things over the course of a year,” Hay said.
It’s difficult to determine the longest shutdown
The election results were mixed as follows: 2018-2019 Partial shutdown It lasted for 35 days.
Republican President Donald Trump argued that the funding bill would include billions of dollars in his US border wall. Senate Democrats refused to go with him. The closure ended as Democrat leaders had to argue: first we will reopen the government, then talk about border security.
Trump will continue to lose to Democrat Joe Biden 2020 Presidential Election. But that race happened during the Covid-19 pandemic, which was clearly a centre and central for voters. Democrats won three Senate seats and built a 50-50 tie and majority, with Vice President Kamala Harris winning the tiebreaker. But Republicans picked up a seat in the House despite the hopes of Democrats expanding their majority.
The latest two extended shutdowns suggest a limited impact on subsequent elections, but the sample size is small. A long, painful shutdown can change the dynamic.
The relatively small amount of money exclusively for advertising purchases indicates that the two parties are looking at a big battle in the future. Still, we hope that the ad will strengthen the theme and highlight the parties’ entry into the medium term.
In the Ad War, it’s healthcare vs immigration
For Democrats, healthcare is central as millions of people in the US will be in charge of more expensive health insurance coverage next year, provided Congress doesn’t extend tax credits that will make them more affordable for those who buy through established markets through “Obamacare.” And millions will lose compensation through new work requirements and other changes Republicans have made to Medicaid. Trump’s tax cuts and spending reduction packageHowever, work requirements will not begin until 2027.
Washington Rep. Suzan Delvene, who chairs the Democratic campaign division, said the number one issue in the nation was affordable prices and rising prices.
“Now, when Donald Trump promises to lower prices on the first day, people are seeing prices go up. That’s a big, broken promise from Republicans,” she said. “And we have candidates who are running to stand up to their community, which is a big reason to win next year.”
Republicans use shutdowns to pivot to immigrants. This is an issue that appears to have helped to sweep them to take Washington all the way into power last year.
“Please tell Democrats and don’t let government hostages be illegal in front of us,” says a digital ad for the National Republican Congressional Committee.
Immigrants who are illegally in the US are not like that. qualifies for the federal health care programincluding Obama’s health overhaul and insurance provided through Medicaid. And Democrats say they’re not trying to change that.
In the latest two extended closures, Republicans were calling for changes to government policies to keep the government open. This time, it’s a democratic lawmaker.
In a statement, North Carolina Rep. Richard Hudson, chairman of the House Republican campaign division, said Republicans voted to keep the government open and vote to secure vital funds and salaries for workers and service members. He called the shutdown “vain and unnecessary.”
“The responsibility for this reckless decision and the harm it causes working families will rest straight with Democrats, and their seats will be costly next November,” Hudson said.
