Openai is launching a new way for developers to build applications inside ChatGPT. Starting Monday, CHATGPT users can access interactive applications from companies such as Booking.com, Expedia, Spotify, Figma, Coursera, Zillow, and Canva. Openai is also launching a preview of its Apps SDK, a developer toolkit for building these apps.
Openai made the announcement at Devday 2025, its annual developer conference.
“We want ChatGpt to be a great way for people to make progress, be more productive, be more creative, learn faster, and do whatever it is they’re trying to do in life,” said CEO Sam Altman. “(Inside ChatGpt) enables a new generation of apps that are interactive, adaptive, and personalized to chat.”
The new system is OpenAI’s latest attempt to build an app ecosystem around its flagship AI product, ChatGpt. The launch follows Openai’s previous efforts to enable developers to build interactive applications, such as the GPT store. Unlike the product, which was a separate App Store, Monday’s launch puts the app directly into ChatGPT responses, allowing users to invoke third-party tools in everyday conversations. This aims to improve the delivery of the apps developers build and provide a richer experience for users of ChatGpt.
Users can draw content from different services by typing the names of different apps in ChatGPT. For example, a user can say, “figma, turn this sketch into an executable diagram.” A user asks, “Coursera, can you tell me something about machine learning?”
In a demo of Zillow’s application, users can use natural language to prompt ChatGpt to search for apartments in their area within a certain price range. ChatGpt then pulls up an interactive map showing the options, and users can talk to ChatGpt to learn more about each one.

ChatGPT also displays related apps in case they may be useful to the user. If someone asks for a playlist for a party this weekend, ChatGpt can bring up the Spotify app in the conversation. In the future, Openai says apps like Doordash, Instacart, Uber, and Alltrails will also be available on ChatGpt.

Openai says the new system is built using the Model Context Protocol (MCP), which allows developers to connect data sources to AI systems. ChatGpt apps can also trigger actions and render fully interactive UI with chatbot responses. Certain apps can display videos on ChatGPT. This is pinned to the top of the web page and can be changed based on user requests.
If a user is already subscribed to a product, they can log into their account directly with ChatGpt to access certain features. Altman also says that Openai will support ways to monetize apps inside ChatGpt in the future, including ChatGpt’s recently launched instant checkout feature.
A key question about ChatGpt’s apps is privacy and how much data third-party developers have access to. Openai says developers “must collect only the minimum data necessary and be transparent about permissions.” However, it is unclear whether developers will have access to your entire conversation with CHATGPT, a small number of past messages, or just the prompt that summoned the app.
It’s also unclear how ChatGpt will choose between competitors such as Doordash and Instacart. You can imagine how companies would pay to surface in ChatGPT responses, but Openai says it plans to prioritize user experience above all else.
