Bounce is a technology designed to increase the portability of social media accounts across open social services, allowing users to migrate their Mastodon accounts to Bluesky. On Tuesday, the makers of Bounce announced their latest beta version, Bounce 2. This allows you to migrate your Mastodon social graph and integrate it with your Bluesky account profile.
The change, which will be introduced on October 20th, will allow users on the open social web to move in either direction from Mastodon to Bluesky or vice versa. This account portability is thought to prevent users from getting stuck with the service if they disagree with the development status, terms of use, moderation decisions, etc. Instead, just get an account and move it somewhere else.
Bounce’s cross-protocol migration tools were first introduced in August by A New Social, a nonprofit that develops technology designed to make the open social web more accessible and functional.
Today, the open social web includes a variety of underlying technologies called protocols, including ActivityPub, which powers Mastodon, Threads, Flipboard, PeerTube, Pixelfed, and more. and the AT protocol that powers Bluesky, Skylight, and other social apps.
Because the two protocols are not interoperable, bridges (tools that connect different platforms) were introduced. Users can now bridge their accounts, allowing other users on different networks to follow their content, regardless of the service they use.
Bounce is built on technology originally developed for Bridgy Fed, another tool that connects Mastodon and Bluesky by allowing users’ profiles on one service to be viewed on the other.
Initially, the service could move a user’s Bluesky account to a bridge account that spans two networks, and then to the user’s Mastodon account.

With today’s release, Bounce 2 can now do the opposite. You can move a Mastodon user’s social graph to Bluesky or merge it into an existing Bluesky (or ATProto) account’s bridge profile.
Things are a little different if you go in this direction, the organization notes.
When you “bounce” from Bluesky to Mastodon, if your Mastodon account is already bridged, the user’s follower list will be merged rather than replaced. Additionally, bouncing from Mastodon to Bluesky doesn’t come with the original post or content, unlike moving in other directions.
“While we believe that services like Bluesky and Mastodon are simply entry points to the open social web, those entry points should not be traps into yet another ecosystem,” A New Social’s announcement reads. “People should be able to think differently, use the technology that works best for them, and continue to connect with people no matter what they use.”
Bounce 2 will be released later this month, and users can support the nonprofit through Patreon or the merchandise store.
