Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Marc Gehi’s situation at Crystal Palace, as Liverpool “continue to pay close attention” to his situation.
Guehi has shone for Crystal Palace and England in recent years, emerging as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League.
The 25-year-old entered the final year of his contract with Crystal Palace in the summer and was thought to be likely to join Premier League giants Liverpool.
The Reds agreed to sign Guehi for around £35 million on deadline day, but the deal fell through as Palace were unable to find a suitable replacement.
This makes Guehi one of the most valuable football players who could become a free agent in 2026, and Liverpool will face competition from European teams heading into next year.
Last week, Palace head coach Oliver Glasner confirmed that Gehi will leave the London club next year.
“I think Marc has already told us that he will not sign a new contract and will leave next year,” Glasner revealed on Friday.

“The club wanted[him]to stay. They offered Marc a new contract, but he said, ‘No, I want to do something different.’ That’s normal.”
“And for us, it’s about how do we deal with this situation? What’s the best way to complete the next steps? And that’s how we’re talking about it.”
Romano then revealed that Guehi had not yet decided on his future, but that the “most likely outcome” was for him to leave Palace on a free transfer.
Romano also revealed that Liverpool “continue to pay close attention and work hard on the England international”, but other teams are also “making calls”.
According to reports in Spain, Real Madrid are “preparing an offer” worth between 30 million and 35 million euros (up to £30 million) to sign Guehi in January, but Romano said there were “no discussions or negotiations taking place at the moment”.
Romano wrote on GiveMeSport: “Despite medical tests being carried out and all agreements in place between the parties, the deal with Liverpool collapsed on deadline day during the summer and a free transfer appears to be the most likely outcome for Guehi.”

“Sources have assured us that the reigning Premier League champions continue to keep an eye on and be keen on the England international and he is still on their shortlist for 2026, but nothing has been pre-agreed after the Deadline Day furore and nothing has been signed or guaranteed at this stage.”
“This is why Liverpool must be included on the list of clubs considering Guehi, but there will be more than one club involved in this battle.” Will there be more from the Premier League? Certainly it is possible.
“However, top Spanish clubs Bayern Munich and Italian teams have also asked us to inform them of the situation.
“There are currently no discussions or negotiations taking place. We are just making the first phone call to familiarize ourselves with one of Europe’s best defenders, available on a free transfer.”
