Google announced Tuesday that Google Fi, its telecommunications service, is getting several new updates, including an AI noise filter and RCS web messaging.
The tech giant says it will now be able to make calls using AI-enhanced voice to reduce background noise and improve voice clarity, even when talking to someone using a landline or older device. The company says this update enables “more natural conversations.”
This feature is automatically turned on, but users can turn it off. AI-enhanced audio will be available starting next month.
When it comes to RCS web messaging, Google is updating its Messages for web integration with a new interface that includes full RCS support for sharing high-resolution photos and videos in message threads. The update is expected to be rolled out in December.
Additionally, Google Fi is expanding the availability of its Wi-Fi Auto Connect+ feature. This provides users with premium Wi-Fi and more reliable connectivity in crowded locations such as airports and malls.
“We’re expanding the availability of this feature to millions of locations, including major airports we support like LAX, ORD, and JFK, as well as participating malls and stores,” Jane Harnett, senior product manager for Google Fi Wireless, said in a blog post. “It works automatically and is available at no additional charge. Plus, we’re the only major carrier to automatically protect your online activities with an encrypted connection when using premium Wi-Fi.”
According to the company, users will know they are connected via Wi-Fi Auto Connect+ when they see the W+ icon in the status bar.
Google also announced that the Google Fi app will introduce an AI-powered personalized summary that explains how your rates, monthly changes, and plan adjustments will affect your future costs.
As part of Tuesday’s announcement, Google Fi is launching a limited-time promotion for new Google Fi subscribers, offering 50% off for 15 months when you bring your phone and subscribe to the service’s Unlimited Essentials or Unlimited Plan.
