The Go Ahead Eagles came from behind to beat Aston Villa on Thursday night, officially taking their winning percentage against the English club to 100%.
Aston Villa were stunned at Deventer on a historic night for the Eredivisie.

Villa lose after conceding a goal for the first time in Europe this season After beating superior opponents Bologna and Feyenoord, Villa lose to a poor Dutch team Emiliano Buendia joins Ollie Watkins for penalty misses this season Defeat ends Villans’ five-game winning streak Unai Emery: Go Ahead Eagles “The defense is great”
Unai Emery’s side got off to a perfect start with Evan Gesand’s fourth-minute opener, but Matisse Slai’s 42nd-minute goal leveled the scores at half-time.
Mats Dale scored just after the end of the opening period to give the Go Ahead Eagles a historic victory, and in the 79th minute Emiliano Buendia converted a penalty shot over the bar.
If Villa had regained the draw, it would have been incredibly tough for the Dutch side. Thankfully they didn’t and the Go Ahead Eagles emerged victorious in their first ever match against an English opponent.
Buendia ‘lack of calm’ over Villa’s continued penalty problem
Villa’s only penalty this season also came in the Europa League, with Ollie Watkins’ agonizing shot saved by Bologna goalkeeper ลukasz Skorupski on matchday one.
Although his efforts were terrible, at least he hit the mark. The same cannot be said for Buendia, who has missed two of his two spot-kicks at Villa this season.
Martin Keown said on commentary: “Obviously, there’s no composure. He just hammered away.” “It’s raining here and the wind is strong. Just keep it low key!”

Villans coach Emery said: “Usually Buendia takes a lot of shooting penalties, but today he missed. That can happen.”
“We will aim to be more clinical than last time. It is clear who will take it. Buendia, Sancho, McGinn, Morgan could take a penalty. Buendia can repeat the penalty.”
Coach Emery talks about his love-hate relationship with Europe
Villa picked up their first win of the season against Bologna in the Europa League, and the result did wonders for improving their Premier League form.
“Europe helped me get back on track,” he said. โWe won two games and I felt better after it was over.
“Europe today showed us how difficult it is to play and to play away. Even if you are dominating and creating chances, if you make mistakes and concede chances, you might lose.”
The Spaniard continued: “We have had this experience. We lost at Legia Warszawa, we drew against Zrinyski and Ajax. We had some good performances at times. Today we created more chances, but we lost. This is football. We are analyzing how we can be better than our opponents and still lose.”
“We had the penalty in the second half and we had the upper hand. We conceded some transitions, but it was clinical. Their defense was great.”
After starting Villa’s season with a win, they must not let European defeat derail them
Victories against Bologna and Feyenoord were key to getting Aston Villa back on track this season, but the disappointment in Holland must not backfire. It was a really stupid loss for a team with such momentum.
If Villa’s next two games weren’t against Manchester City (h) and Liverpool (a), two of the three Premier League teams wouldn’t be claiming title aspirations.
The Midlands side currently sit 11th in the Premier League with a stable goal difference of zero, but things can change quickly in football.
Two bad results could realistically drop them to 15th place. It’s not the end of the road, considering there are only eight games left, but it’s far from ideal for a team aiming for the Champions League.
Man City are in a good position at the moment and are a difficult opponent for Villa, but Josep Guardiola knows how difficult it is to play at Villa Park. Sunday’s results will say a lot about the credibility of both sides in this campaign.
