Former Man United striker Dimitar Berbatov has urged summer signing Benjamin Sesco to be “arrogant” and “angry” towards his team-mates in order to improve his performances.
The Red Devils spent more than £200m on new signings in the summer transfer window, with the majority of that going towards the signings of Sesco, Brian Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha to improve their attack.
In the 2024/25 Premier League season, only four Premier League clubs scored fewer goals than Man United, but this season there has been a notable turnaround with only six teams scoring more goals than Ruben Amorim’s side.
Mbeumo and Cunha were particularly impressive in the 4-2 win over Brighton at the weekend, but Sesco has struggled to contribute this season.
The Slovenian international has scored two goals in 10 games in all competitions and Berbatov offered Sesco advice on how to succeed at Old Trafford.
Asked what advice he would give Sesco, Manchester United icon Berbatov told Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel:

“And when you make a good run and the ball doesn’t come to you, say or express it in a way that your teammates understand: ‘I’m here. I’m making the run for you. Respect my run. Not every time, but look at me and believe in what I can do with that run.’
“Be angry sometimes. Scream, curse at him, whatever. (It’s) nothing personal. I mean, hey, that’s why I’m here. Just give me the ball. Pass to me. I’m going to try to score for you. I’m going to score for you. That’s why I’m here.”
“Be vocal at halftime and before and after the game. Sometimes I think the players need to be more aggressive and emotional. Like, ‘Pass the ball, dude!’
Berbatov continued, “Be mad at your teammates. You’re not always polite and best friends and peers. Be mad at them. Demand more from each other. Be mad at your teammates.”

“Whoever is in the captaincy, be the one who demands more from yourself and from them.
“Ultimately it comes down to the strikers scoring. If they don’t score enough goals, people will pay attention to them.”
“If you’re someone who can stay in the box, train for it. Stay in the box. Training session after training session with empty goals. If someone gives you the ball, just tap in. Get in the habit of scoring those easy goals too.”
