The international chess governing body announced on Tuesday that it had filed a complaint against the former world chess champion. Vladimir Kramnik after he raised unproven allegations of cheating against fellow players. Daniel Naroditskywho passed away last month When I was 29 years old.
The International Chess Federation, known by the acronym FIDE, said in a news release that the complaint focuses on harassment and “insulting the dignity of an individual.”
Naroditsky’s cause of death has not been made public.
Mr Kramnik accused US grandmaster Naroditsky of wrongdoing last year and continued to share his allegations on social media.
Naroditsky, a prodigy chess player who helped usher in the online chess boom with instructional videos and livestreams on YouTube, denied the allegations.
In his final livestream before his death, Naroditsky said Kramnik’s claims were a huge blow.
“Ever since the Kramnik incident, I feel like when things start going well for me, people have the worst intentions. The problem is that the effects only linger,” Naroditsky said.
Other chess grandmasters, including Hikaru Nakamura and Nihal Sarin, condemned Kramnik’s actions, accusing Russian players of harassing Naroditsky.
Kramnik did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent through his GoFundMe page for his anti-corruption campaign, but he has previously called the federation’s investigation “insulting and unfair.”
The complaint filed with the FIDE Ethics and Discipline Committee describes a “pattern of behavior spanning approximately two years” related to potential harassment, the federation said in a statement. It also includes testimony provided by Czech grandmaster David Navarra and “people close to Daniel Naroditsky,” who also accused Kramnik of wrongdoing.
Under the Anti-Cheating Act, the federation may impose sanctions on players who make baseless accusations based on emotion or insufficient data. Substantial evidence is also required to begin a cheating investigation. There was no documented report of the federation investigating Naroditsky.
The governing body previously announced it had referred Kramnik’s comments before and after Naroditsky’s death to its ethics committee. Tuesday’s announcement marks the formal filing of the complaint.
