John Obi Mikel has urged Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca to replace Roberto Sanchez with a “top goalkeeper” as soon as possible.
The Blues have the seventh best defense in the Premier League this season, with Maresca’s side heading into the international break in third place.
Chelsea, who are six points behind leaders Arsenal, have come under pressure from Maresca at times this season, but with two consecutive wins they have quickly risen to the top of the league.
Martin Keown even suggested that Chelsea are dark horses to win the Premier League, even though there is still more than six months of the season left.
Former Chelsea midfielder Mikel was critical of Sanchez, who signed from Brighton for £25m in 2023, last season, but believes the Spaniard’s form has improved “a little bit” this season.
Despite this improvement, Mikel believes Maresca needs to sign a “top” player to replace Sanchez, saying on his YouTube channel:

“When he’s doing well, we have to give him a little bit of credit. Yes, Sanchez is doing a little bit better compared to last season, but he has made some mistakes.”
“He started the season a little shaky again, but now he’s a little more consistent in terms of performance. But I still think we need a top, top goalkeeper.”
Speaking about Chelsea’s goals for the rest of the season, Mikel added: “I don’t think it’s possible to win the league this season.
“I think we lack a bit more experience in terms of winning the league, but I think top four should be our goal this season, Chelsea.”

Moises Caicedo has been one of Chelsea’s standout players so far this season, with Sanchez hailing him as “the best player who can play in any position” after the Blues beat Tottenham 1-0 on November 1.
Said Sanchez: “He’s the real deal! He’s the best player to play any position. Is there anyone better than him in that position?”
“He’s a beast. Any challenge he takes, he wins 50-50. His composure on the ball, his finishing…if he hits it on target, it’s a goal!”
“I knew him at Brighton when he wasn’t even playing for Brighton yet. I remember talking to him at lunch about whether he was going to go on loan or not. He took the chance and has been flying ever since, getting better and better. He’s only 24.”
“He hasn’t changed much. Personality-wise he’s always been the same, hard-working, hard-working, quiet. He’s a very nice guy. He’s obviously gotten a little bit better with age, he’s gained experience and he’s getting better and better on the pitch. His confidence is growing more and more.”
