ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – U.S. Air Force base housing in the Florida Panhandle will be without outdoor Christmas decorations, at least before Thanksgiving.
A private company that operates a nearby housing community Tyndall Air Force Base It recently told residents to take down their Christmas decorations and not put them back up until after Turkey Day.
“All holiday decorations should reflect the respective month and should be done at least 30 days before the specific holiday,” the homeowner said in a message.
Tyndall spokesman Air Force Col. Justin Davidson Beebe said Wednesday that the landowner, Balfour Beatty Communities, established the policy. The company’s Tyndall Air Force Base Homes operations manager did not respond to email inquiries.
“They enforce the community standards outlined in the legally binding lease agreement that all residents voluntarily sign,” Davidson Beebe said in an email. “These guidelines are not part of broader Air Force policy. Local standards are set by privatized housing management companies at some installations, so standards may vary from base to base.”
Tyndall AFB Homes’ 59-page community handbook states that winter decorations and lighting are only allowed from the week after Thanksgiving until New Year’s Day, and that lights can only be turned on from 6 to 11 p.m.
The handbook states, “Do not leave lights on overnight or during the day.” “It must be removed by the third week of January at the latest. It cannot be left outside all year round.”
