WhatsApp is getting its own version of a status update feature similar to Instagram’s notes.
Similar to Instagram, this new feature will allow users of the Meta-owned messaging app to post short text updates that can be seen by others. In this space, you can let people know what you’re up to and what’s new in your life.
The company suggests users can also post conversation starters and use the space to share why they can’t talk right now.
While this addition may be new to many, the company points out in a blog post that this so-called “About” feature was actually WhatsApp’s first feature. Before WhatsApp focused on secure private messaging, people could quickly share short updates like this.

With the relaunch of this feature, WhatsApp has made users’ “About” status more visible than before. Others will be able to see your status at the top of one-on-one chats with friends and user profiles. Additionally, users can tap on someone’s “About” status in the chat to reply directly.
Similar to Instagram notes, WhatsApp About statuses also disappear after a day by default.
However, the company says users can adjust the timer if they want it to go off sooner or if they want it to last longer than 24 hours. Additionally, users can decide whether they want their About status to be visible only to their contacts or more publicly.
At the time of release, the feature isn’t as robust as Instagram Notes, but it also supports short looping videos and offers an integration that lets you share the music you’re streaming. However, if the new features are widely adopted, such improvements may become a reality over time.
