Netflix‘s modest British limited series Adolescence has continued to captivate audiences, while Shondaland’s latest offering The Residence seemed to debut below expectations.
Adolescence amassed 42M views from March 17 to 23, nearly double the audience from its debut week. This is an incredibly impressive performance for the series, which has now tallied 66.3M views in just two weeks of availability. Deadline also reported earlier Tuesday that the series made ratings history in the UK.
The outsize success makes a great case for the series to continue marching into Netflix’s most popular series list. In tenth place currently is Bridgerton Season 2, which came in at 93.8M views in its first 91 days. Adolescence would only need 27.5M views to overtake Bridgerton.
Speaking of Shondaland, the prolific producer’s latest series The Residence came in second place on the English TV list with 6.4M views. While this isn’t a terrible performance, it’s hard not to point out that this is likely not the performance that Netflix or Shonda Rhimes were hoping for from the star-studded whodunit, considering that Bridgerton and Inventing Anna became near instant hits on the platform.
Netflix wasn’t consistently releasing data when Bridgerton premiered in December 2020, but the streamer did say that within a month the first season had attracted 82M households. All three seasons remain on the Most Popular list as of now, and Queen Charlotte and Inventing Anna previously held spots.
Kate Hudson’s Running Point, which has already been renewed, drew another 3.5M views, making it to third place on the charts, while the latest episode of WWE’s Raw took fourth place.
Over in film, The Electric State is still chugging along with another 22.5M views, which is just slightly under its debut week performance. Again, not terribly poor performance, but certainly not the growth that would be expected from the Russo brothers’ latest film foray, which features a heavy hitting cast including Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt.
The Electric State would have an incredibly difficult time making it onto Netflix’s Most Popular English Film list, since No. 10 We Can Be Heroes has 137M views in its premiere window. Back in Action, on the other hand, moved up to No. 7 on the all-time film list.
