Amazon Music on Monday announced the launch of Fan Groups, a new beta feature that lets users create and join groups based on their favorite genres and artists. This feature allows fans to chat, post, and listen to songs shared within the group.
This feature is currently being tested in Canada on iOS and Android devices.
Users can access fan groups through the “Search” tab below the search bar at the top of the app. From there, you can explore more than 30 different groups that specialize in a variety of musical interests, from indie rock and country to Punjabi and K-pop, according to the company’s blog post.
Group members can create new posts, participate in ongoing chat threads, and share or save song recommendations. Users can also stream music without leaving the conversation or group. Just tap the play button at the top to listen to all added songs. You can also go to the separate “Music” tab next to “Posts.”
In particular, artists can join these groups, giving them new ways to connect directly with their fans. They can share exclusive content, interact more personally, and build a stronger community with their supporters.

A company spokesperson told TechCrunch that anyone can set up a new group, and admins can mute members and delete messages. Users can report content and block other members if necessary.
The new feature represents Amazon’s strategy to compete with Spotify, which has been working to attract users through various social features.

Spotify introduced messaging in August, as well as a “Jam” feature that lets users co-create playlists with friends and listen to songs together.
SoundCloud also offers a commenting feature and recently updated its platform to add new social features like playlists based on what your friends are listening to and direct messaging tools for artists. Another platform, Stationhead, allows users to listen to music together during livestream parties.
Fan Groups will be rolled out to customers in the U.S. and other markets starting next year.
