Andre Onana’s performances for Trabzonspor after leaving Manchester United can be summed up in “one word” as it became clear that he may be leaving Manchester United permanently.
Onana joined Man United from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023 for £47 million, but was allowed to leave the club in September following some unconvincing performances for the Red Devils last season.
With their fourth straight win, Trabzonspor moved into second place in the Turkish Super Lig, and Onana has not tasted defeat in his new club since his debut loss against Fenerbahce.

And Trabzonspor correspondent Hasan Tuncel, when asked to rate the performance, gave the 29-year-old his full praise, calling his contribution “perfect”.
“In a word: amazing,” Tansell said. “Onana’s debut match was against Fenerbahçe. Trabzonspor lost 1-0, but the story of that match was much deeper than the scoreline.
“Trabzonspor’s goal was canceled, causing controversy and creating real tension on the pitch. Amidst that chaos, Onana’s leadership was outstanding. He calmed his teammates, used his experience and pulled off some amazing saves.”
“From that moment on, not only the Turkish fans but everyone watching around the world knew that he was still a top-level goalkeeper. He continued to maintain the same standard in subsequent games.
“His performance against Kayserispor was amazing. He saved almost every shot on target. Against Eyupspor, his two decisive saves helped keep Trabzonspor’s title hopes alive.”
“So far he’s been perfect. Beyond goalkeeping, he’s become a leader in the dressing room.
“He personally coaches three young goalkeepers: Onuralp Cevikan, Ahmet Dogan Yildirim and Elorcan Colak, coaching them during and after training sessions. This coaching has earned him great respect within the club.”

Commenting on how Onana was welcomed to the club, Tuncel added: “In Trabzonspor’s culture, the signing of big-time players is usually welcomed with enthusiasm, but Onana’s arrival was something beyond the norm.”
“We have seen large crowds at the airport for players like Daniel Sturridge and John Obi Mikel, but Onana’s reception had a different feel. He arrived with his family, so the club decided to organize a more personal and emotional reception.”
“The fans interacted directly with him and said, ‘Don’t worry, we’re with you forever.'” That moment, combined with Onana’s smiling face, created a very iconic image.
“Players who come with their families usually adapt much faster, which is an important factor in professional football. Onana taking this process seriously and settling down with his family was considered a very positive sign for both the club and its supporters.”
Despite Onana’s excellent form, it is unlikely that Trabzonspor have the wherewithal to complete his permanent transfer.
Tansell further admitted: “The club is very happy with his performances, but given the transfer fee that Manchester United paid for him, a permanent deal seems financially difficult at the moment.”
“However, if Onana continues at this level and United lower their asking price, I have no doubt that Trabzonspor will be interested in a permanent move.
“For now, Onana’s focus is on coaching the club’s young goalkeepers and helping them develop. However, if the situation improves, Trabzonspor will certainly want to keep him on a permanent contract.”
