Another fire broke out at the Novelis Aluminum plant in Oswego, New York, which supplies sheet metal for trucks, including Ford’s all-electric F-150 Lightning.
The four-alarm fire started Thursday morning and is still burning. “Everyone working at the factory was safely evacuated,” Novelis told TechCrunch. “The fire is under control and we are ensuring that crews are fully extinguishing it at the scene.” Local news outlet CNY Central first reported the new blaze.
The Novelis plant was shut down after a massive fire in September, and Ford said the disruption would likely cost the automaker about $2 billion. Despite a second small fire in October, the aluminum supplier had plans to restart production at its New York facility in December. (Stellantis and Nissan also suffered small production hits due to the September fires.)
Ford has used aluminum body panels for years and had to scale back production of virtually all of its F-150 trucks after the September fire. Automakers slowly resumed production of these trucks in October. But the company is prioritizing gasoline and hybrid versions of the F-150 Lightning, which executives are reportedly considering.
It’s unclear how the new fires will affect Ford’s plans. The company did not respond to requests for comment. The Oswego Fire Department did not respond to a request for comment.
