Parents can adjust their plans to return to school based on what’s best for their children. Nikkya Hargrove moves her twin daughters up 30 minutes of bedtime the week before school starts.
Sometimes her 10-year-old negotiates a few extra minutes to wake up and read. Hargrove said these conversations are important as children age and defend themselves. If they were too late and there was no best morning, Hargrove said it could be a learning experience too.
“If they’re groggies and don’t like how they feel, they know, ‘OK, I have to go to bed early,'” said Hargrove, an author in Connecticut and an independent bookstore owner.
Soaking in the sunlight by sitting in the window or going outside in the morning can help train your brain, Verma said.

Sleep quality is just as important as duration. Jitter on the first day can make it difficult to fall asleep no matter how quickly you go to bed.
Dixon says parents can talk to their children and learn what’s causing them anxiety. Is it your first day at your new school? Is it afraid to make new friends?
