Billy Joel Postpones Tour Dates To Recover From Unspecified Surgery

-

We’ll have to wait awhile for the Piano Man to sing us his songs.

Billy Joel said today that he has postponed eight tour dates to recover from surgery for an undisclosed “medical condition.” The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer posted on Instagram that he will “undergo physical therapy under the supervision of his doctors.” See the rescheduled tour dates below.

“While I regret postponing any shows, my health must come first,” Joel said in the statement (see the post below). “I look forward to getting back on stage and sharing the joy of live music with our amazing fans. Thank you for your understanding.”

He is expected to make a full recovery.

The stadium tour was set to kick off Saturday in Toronto, with Stevie Nicks also on the bill. Four of the reskedded dates feature Sting. Nine of Joel’s scheduled summer concerts will go on as planned.

In February 2024, the multiplatinum singer and pianist released his first new single since 2007, titled “Turn the Lights Back On,” and a month later he played his 100th concert at New York’s Madison Square Garden — a venue he has sold out more than any other act. CBS in April aired a commemorative special, 100th: Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden -The Greatest Arena Run of All Time. The network re-aired the special a week later after its signal cut out in many part of the U.S. during his signature hit “Piano Man.”

His double-disc Greatest Hits Volume I and Volume II is the seventh-best-selling album in U.S. history, at 23 million units and counting. Joel also is No. 7 overall among acts who have sold the most combined albums and singles, with 86 million, per the RIAA. He has amassed 13 platinum albums since breaking out with 1973’s Piano Man, four of which — 52nd Street, Glass Houses, Storm Front and River of Dreams — topped the Billboard 200 chart. His best-selling studio album is 1977’s The Stranger, which has shifted 11 million units in the U.S.
