OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) – The Canadian Postal Workers Union took a strike Thursday after the government announced that door-to-door mail delivery for almost all households within the next decade.
Canada Post means strike means mail, packages will not be processed or delivered during the strike and new items will not be accepted.
“Canada Post’s operations will be closed during a national strike, affecting millions of Canadians and businesses across the country,” the email service said.
Procurement Minister Joel Wrightbound has announced a drastic change aimed at hardening Canada Post’s finances In response to a decline in letter emails and a small share of government companies’ parcel market. Changes include more community mailboxes and slower delivery times.
The union said it was decorated with change and argued. Canada Post And the government is creating conditions that will reduce the demand for its letters and parcel services.
Cupw said it added that all 55,000 Canadian Postal Members were on strike immediately and have not engaged in “actual negotiations” so far.
The Canada Post said the strike would mean further deterioration in its financial situation.
Employment Minister Patti Hajidu wrote that it is up to the union and government companies to find a balance between the future of the post office and respect for employees.
“Federal mediators will continue to be available to support the negotiation process, and I encourage both parties to continue to work together towards a fair resolution,” she wrote in a statement.
Lightbound said it would accept all recommendations from the investigation committee that called for the introduction of more community mailboxes.
“The Canada Post is an agency of a country that is older than ours and has served Canadians for over 150 years,” says Lightbound. “For generations, postal workers have connected communities to every corner of the country, providing an essential lifeline to hundreds of Northern, Indigenous and rural communities.”
At the same time, he said the service is facing a “existential crisis.” “Repeated relief from the federal government is not the solution,” he said.
Changes to email delivery are expected to increase the time it takes for Canada Post to send letter emails on average from 3-4 days to 3-7 days.
Additionally, 4 million Canadians will switch services from door-to-door delivery to community mailbox models, with some post offices permanently shutting down. Lightbound said the changes could save $400 million in Canadians (US$287 million) a year.
Lightbound said more than three do not deliver door-to-door to four households, but there has been a pause when expanding their use of community mailboxes. That moratorium is over.
