Carey Mulligan (Maestro) is is in negotiations to join Greta Gerwig’s Narnia movie for Netflix, based on the bestselling fantasy novels by C.S. Lewis, sources have confirmed to Deadline.
Netflix declined to comment.
Mulligan will play the mother of Digory, one of the film’s young protagonists. As previously announced, others in the cast will include Daniel Craig as Digory’s uncle, Meryl Streep as lion Aslan the Great, and Emma Mackey as the White Witch.
The new Narnia is reportedly an adaptation of The Magician’s Nephew, the sixth novel in the series, which examines the origins of Narnia. The story watches as Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer discover this magical world by way of Digory’s uncle’s magic. Production is expected to begin next year.
Netflix revealed in 2018 that it would develop new series and film projects based on Lewis’ beloved The Chronicles of Narnia series, bringing Gerwig on board to write and direct the first movie in 2020. The film is set for exclusive two-week IMAX global run for Thanksgiving 2026 in advance of its debut on the streamer.
A three-time Oscar nominee, Mulligan was most recently seen starring in the critically acclaimed Sundance comedy The Ballad of Wallis Island from director James Griffiths, which Focus Features released in the U.S. in March. Also recently seen in the films Saltburn, Maestro, and Spaceman, she’ll next be seen starring opposite Oscar Isaac, Charles Melton, and Cailee Spaeny in the second season of Netflix’s hit series Beef.
THR was first to the news of Mulligan’s Narnia talks.
