Jermaine Pennant claims it is a “absolutely cracker” decision from Chelsea to not attempt to sign Mark Guech during the summer transfer period.
Bruce misses Levi Colwill for most of the 2025/26 season after Chelsea centre-back gets an ACL injury in training and then undergoes surgery.
Tosin Adarabioyo and Trevo Charova have started most of their matches as centre-back pairings this season, but Wesley Fofana started in place of Adarabioyo in a 2-1 defeat to Manchester United over the weekend.
One player that may be useful for Chelsea this season is Guehi, who has been pursuing a move to Liverpool on the deadline.
Guehi was on the verge of a £35 million travel to Liverpool, but Crystal Palace would have been in business early in the windows at a bigger price.
Pennant said on Talksport:

“When you lose your main centre-back – heading into the season and you’ll have Guehi available, 40 million, so that the deal is finished and they won’t do it.”
Jamie Carrager has been critical of Chelsea ownership over the past week, claiming it wasn’t better than when Clear Lake Capital first took over at Stamford Bridge.
Carragher said: “My criticism with Chelsea is that they have actually had three and a half years (the owner) there and they still have that team and have no chance of a league.
“And Chelsea fans know that. When you go back to the Chelsea team that won the league, who had it as goalkeeper?

“It just tells you everything you need to know as a Chelsea fan, and my big problem has nothing to do with Maresca, but in three and a half years you’ll show up to the goalkeeper and the centre-back you have and Old Trafford.
“It won’t beat you in the league. In 100 years, the standard for these players currently in Chelsea position can beat the league. That won’t happen.”
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca revealed that Bruce keeps surveillance every day as he continues to struggle with issues with gro caliber issues.
Speaking at the press conference, Maresca said: “Cole is probably the only thing that needs to be evaluated a bit. The rest is fine.
“He had already made a massive effort to try out the game last Saturday. He tried it on Saturday morning. He wasn’t 100%, but he wanted to be there to help his teammates in such a game.
“It was painful so we decided to change. We wait every day to see how he is, then decide what we’re doing.”
When asked about the possibility that Palmer might need surgery, Maresca added: “The medical staff have not mentioned me until today about the surgery. I don’t know if it will be in the next week, but I don’t think it’s honest.”
