The optimist green shoot that emerged on the first day of Federico Chiesa’s season was trampled two days after his Liverpool fate was sealed for at least four more months. He is his only Premier League goal and can blame the fans for this second monumental mistake.
He appeared for just 104 minutes in his debut Premier League season and as he was still at Anfield and was considered impossible ahead of the summer, he linked to most of the Serie A club to end his disadvantageous time in England.
“It’s a strange alternative. It’s really weird,” Jamie Carrager said as Liverpool chased the game and replaced Florian Wiltz in the 82nd minute at Anfield. Six minutes later, Italian International had scored a great goal to win the game on Arneslot’s side before Mohamed Sara went to bed at rest.
The Jubilant celebration preceded the hope that Liverpool fans could see something closer to the player who swept the Euro 2020 this season, but cult hero status Chiesa achieved it through his goal and a coordinated and heartwarming effort to support him in opposition to Rival, who laughs at his contributions.
“I don’t know, maybe it’s a good song to sing,” Slot said when asked about love coming down from Anfield. “But I probably won’t give him the credit he deserves.”
Maybe we aren’t either. Chiesa should not have joined Liverpool in the first place – that was his first mistake, but as he managed in his debut campaign, he has already made half of his Premier League appearances this season. And while Slots referenced his heartbreaking incompetence in his inability to turn his eyes to Diogo Jota from the bench to change the game courtesy of Liverpool, he probably didn’t even consider Italian an option last season.

“We’re looking at Federico, which is completely different from most of last season,” Slot said after Bournemouth’s victory. “He’s in a better place now.”
The goal was proof of that. It was a sharp and skillful finish. And now there is a belief from Liverpool fans at least that Chiesa can make a difference from the bench. But it gives them a very welcome opportunity to sing the revised Dean Martin songs.
“I saw the bench that had him and 16-year-old Rio (ngumoha) as an offensive option,” Slot added. And it’s Chiesa’s luck that last week’s birthday teenagers, ages 17-17, have secured a 3-2 victory over Newcastle and secured an even more dramatic winner to ensure they’ll be taking part in Liverpool’s Champions League team at the expense of Chiesa.
Italian manager Gennaro Gattuso revealed this week that Chiesa said he wanted to be 100% before returning to the national squad, but after this latest crushing blow at the 27-year-old since Liverpool signed Alexander Isak’s new £130 million striker, he must surprise him if he’ll return to the peck ahead.
He may now regret his decision to return to his hometown. He supports fans staying at clubs that have accepted him. Ironically, in a viral song at the forefront of praise, under the manager who uses him as the most reserved, he goes back to seeing him as a last resort to avoiding him.
